The crown is part of the root canal, not an upsell

The most common way a root canal fails in India is not a badly cleaned canal. It is a well-treated tooth that never got its crown, because the patient felt fine once the pain stopped and did not come back.

A tooth without its pulp has no blood supply. It dries out and turns brittle over months. A molar bites with tens of kilos of force several thousand times a day. The split, when it comes, usually runs down into the root, and a tooth that splits below the gum cannot be saved. The root canal money is then gone as well.

So when we quote a root canal here, we quote the crown alongside it, and we tell you when it needs to be fitted. It is not a separate decision made later.

What it costs

We quote after the examination, before the tooth is touched, with the alternatives priced next to each other. No figure is printed here because a crown’s price is almost entirely the material and the lab, and both are decisions you make rather than facts about your tooth:

• Metal-ceramic is a metal shell with porcelain fired over it. Strong, proven, cheaper, and it can show a thin grey line at the gum margin as gums recede over the years. Fine on a molar.
• Zirconia is solid ceramic. Stronger than metal-ceramic, needs less tooth removed to make room for it, no metal to show through, and it looks like a tooth. Worth it anywhere that shows when you smile.

A bridge is priced per unit. Replacing one missing tooth with a conventional bridge means three units, the false tooth plus a crown on each neighbour, so roughly three times a single crown. The other thing that moves it: if the tooth underneath is so broken it has to be built up before it can hold a crown at all, that build-up is part of the work and we say so at the quote, not afterwards.

Where a bridge is the right answer, and where it is not

A bridge has one real cost that is easy to miss: to carry it, the two healthy teeth either side of the gap have to be cut down to crown preparations. If those teeth are pristine, that is a lot to give up.

So the honest rule we use:

• Neighbouring teeth already crowned or heavily filled? A bridge makes sense. They were going to need crowns anyway, and the bridge gets three problems solved in one go.
• Neighbouring teeth healthy and untouched? An implant is usually the better answer. It leaves them alone and it preserves the bone under the gap, which a bridge does not.
• Not enough bone for an implant, and not willing to have a graft? A bridge, or a partial denture, is the practical choice.

We will say which of these you are in at the first appointment, with the X-ray in front of you.

What we do differently

The shade is checked before we prepare anything, against your own neighbouring teeth, not from memory. A crown that is a shade off is obvious to you every time you look in a mirror and impossible to fix afterwards without remaking it.

The bite is adjusted properly at fitting. A crown that sits even slightly high aches, and eventually cracks. This takes ten minutes at the fitting appointment and saves a remake.

If the try-in is not right, it goes back to the lab. Cementing something you are unsure about and hoping you get used to it is how patients end up unhappy with dentistry in general.
