Why this clinic, for this procedure

Most general dental clinics do root canals. Very few are run by someone whose postgraduate degree is in nothing else.

Dr. Chaitanya K holds an MDS in Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, and was her university’s gold medalist in that same subject in her BDS, years before she specialised in it. Endodontics, saving teeth whose nerve has been infected, is the whole of that speciality. That matters more than it sounds. A root canal succeeds or fails on one thing: whether every canal in the tooth was found, cleaned along its full length, and sealed. Molars routinely have three canals and often a fourth that is easy to miss. A missed canal is the single most common reason a treated tooth flares up again a year later and ends up extracted anyway.

What we actually do differently

We take an X-ray first and tell you the price before we start. Not after. You see the image, you see how many canals the tooth has, and you get a figure in writing. If it turns out to be more complex than the image suggested, we stop and tell you rather than adding it to the bill.

We use rotary instruments under magnification. Nickel-titanium rotary files clean and shape canals faster and more completely than hand files, which is what makes single-sitting treatment safe rather than rushed. Magnification is how the fourth canal in an upper molar gets found instead of missed.

We spend a long time on the numbing. An infected, inflamed pulp is harder to anaesthetise than a healthy one, and a rushed injection is the reason root canals have the reputation they have. Nothing begins until the tooth is properly numb and you have told us so.

What it costs, honestly

We do not print a figure on this page, and the reason is not coyness. A range wide enough to be honest about every root canal we do would run from a single-canal incisor to a lower molar with four curved canals and somebody else’s failed attempt already inside it. A range that wide tells you nothing. A narrow one would be a quote we would then have to break in front of you, which is worse.

So the figure comes at the first appointment, off your own X-ray, in writing, before anything starts. It does not move afterwards unless we stop, show you why, and ask.

What decides it is mostly which tooth it is:

• An upper or lower front tooth has a single, straight canal. The shortest appointment.
• A premolar usually has one or two canals.
• A molar has three, sometimes four, often curved. The longest appointment, and the highest figure.

Two other things move it. Retreatment of a root canal that was done elsewhere and has failed costs more than a first-time treatment, because the old filling material has to come out before the canal can be cleaned properly. And the crown that most back teeth need afterwards is a separate treatment with its own price, decided by the material you choose. We will tell you whether your tooth genuinely needs one. For a molar the answer is nearly always yes; for a front tooth, sometimes not.
