A cavity you can catch a fingernail or your tongue on has already broken through the enamel. It will not stop there.
Food packing into one spot

So you know exactly what to expect before you sit in the chair.

Examination and X-ray if needed
We check the tooth and, for anything between teeth, take a digital X-ray. Cavities between molars are invisible to the eye until they are well advanced.

Numbing, if the cavity is deep
A shallow cavity in enamel often needs no anaesthetic at all. Anything approaching the pulp does, and we would rather numb you than have you brace through it.

Removing the decay
Only the softened, infected tooth comes out. Sound tooth stays, because every millimetre kept is strength the tooth still has.

Building the tooth back
Composite is placed in layers and light cured, shade matched to the tooth. For a front tooth this is where the time goes, because the layering is what makes it disappear.

The cheapest appointment you will ever regret skipping
Every root canal described on this site began as a cavity that a filling would have handled.
Decay is a one-way process. It does not remineralise once it has broken through enamel into the dentine underneath, and dentine is much softer, so it spreads faster from there. The tooth stays silent through all of this, because dentine hurts only when the decay gets close to the pulp. By the time it hurts, the filling window has usually closed.
Set the two appointments side by side:
- Cavity found at a check-up. One visit, half an hour, sometimes without an anaesthetic at all, and the cheapest item on our list.
- The same tooth eighteen months later. A root canal, at several times the price, plus the crown it will then need, at several times again.
Nobody has ever come back and said they wished they had waited. That is the entire argument for a six-monthly examination, and it is why our cleaning appointment includes a full check rather than just a scale and polish.
Composite, not amalgam
We place tooth-coloured composite for everything.
That is partly cosmetic and mostly structural. Amalgam does not bond to the tooth; it is held in mechanically, which means cutting undercuts into sound tooth to lock it in place. Composite bonds chemically, so the preparation is limited to the decay itself. Every millimetre of tooth left behind is strength the tooth keeps.
Composite has a real trade-off worth knowing: it is technique sensitive. It has to be placed in layers, kept genuinely dry while it is placed, and cured properly. A composite rushed in ten minutes fails at the margins in two years. That is where the chair time on this appointment goes.
Front teeth take longer, and should
Rebuilding a broken front corner is not the same job as filling a molar. A natural front tooth is not one colour: it is more translucent at the edge, more opaque near the gum, often with faint internal characterisation. Matching that means layering different shades and opacities rather than filling the gap with one paste.
One of our patients came in with a broken front tooth and left the same day with one that, in his words, looks exactly like the rest of his teeth. That is a layering result, not a material result, and it is why we quote more chair time for a front tooth than a back one.
When a filling is not the right answer
We will tell you when a filling is the wrong treatment rather than placing one that will fail:
- More than about half the tooth is missing. The remaining walls flex around a large filling and eventually crack. That tooth wants a crown.
- The decay has reached the pulp. No filling settles an infected nerve. That is a root canal, and placing a filling over it only delays the diagnosis.
- The tooth already has a large old filling that keeps chipping. Replacing like with like buys a year. A crown wraps the tooth instead.

Aftercare
After the appointment
You leave with this written down, and a number you can message if anything feels wrong.
- You can eat as soon as the numbness has gone, which is usually two to three hours.
- Composite is fully set when you leave, so there is no waiting period on that side.
- Some cold sensitivity for a few days after a deep filling is normal and settles.
- If the bite feels high, or sensitivity gets worse rather than better after a week, come back.
- A filling does not make the tooth immune. The same habits that caused the cavity will cause the next one.

We do not publish a figure, because the honest one depends on the material and on your tooth. You get the exact amount after the examination and the X-ray, before anything is started, and it does not move afterwards unless we stop and tell you why.

Fillings: questions patients ask
How much does a filling cost in Koramangala?
You get the figure after the examination and before we start. We do not publish one, because a small single-surface cavity in a back tooth and a layered composite rebuild of a broken front tooth are both called a filling and are not remotely the same appointment. What moves it is how large the cavity is and how many surfaces it reaches, whether the decay is deep enough to need a protective liner underneath, and whether it is a front tooth, which has to be shade-matched and built up in layers.
Will the filling be silver or tooth-coloured?
Tooth-coloured. We place composite, shade matched to your own tooth, for everything. Amalgam is cheaper and lasts well on back teeth, but it requires cutting away more sound tooth to hold it in place, and most patients do not want visible metal. Composite bonds to the tooth, so it needs less removed.
Does getting a filling hurt?
A shallow cavity in enamel often needs no anaesthetic, because enamel has no nerve supply. Anything deeper is numbed first, and then you feel pressure and vibration rather than pain. Tell us if you are nervous when you book and we will take the numbing slowly.
How long does a filling last?
Five to ten years for a well-placed composite, often longer on a small one. What ends a filling is decay restarting at the margin where filling meets tooth, so how you clean matters more than the material. Old fillings are checked at every six-monthly visit.
I have no pain, so can the cavity wait?
Pain arrives when decay reaches the pulp, which is the point at which a filling is no longer enough and it becomes a root canal. That is the whole argument for treating a cavity while it is still boring. One filling, and a root canal plus the crown that follows it, are the same tooth six months apart, and they are not remotely the same afternoon or the same bill.
Can a broken front tooth be fixed in one visit?
Usually yes. Composite is built up in layers and light cured, so the tooth is finished when you leave. If most of the tooth is gone, or the break has exposed the nerve, it needs more than a filling and we will tell you that after the X-ray rather than starting and stopping.
